The concept of the exhibition design has been an integral part of the survey activity of the Permanent ADI design Observatory since the first edition of the Annual Index (1998/1999). Over the last 10 years, dozens of fitting projects have been reported for exhibitions, events, retail outlets, museums, stands and exhibition fittings and expositions. Of course, these projects were all selected for their high quality, but also to attempt to describe/define the domain of the exhibition design.
A project domain whose contents and limits are anything but evident (architecture, graphic design, communication: what are the neighbouring sectors? And which are intersecting it?) and that still represents a heritage of totally peculiar design experimentation. In fact in Italy we are (and we have been) witness to a deep and sophisticated development of shapes, mechanisms and apparatus for a peerless art of exhibiting, designing temporary expositions of objects, concepts and themes.
Over these years, it has not been easy to pinpoint the specific characters of the exhibition project, that is the exhibition design that, though legitimately introduced among the project professions, has suffered for the mixture/confusion with other domains (in particular visual design) with which it partially shares the same goals but not the same methods, processes and outcomes. Several prestigious recommendations and two Golden Compass (on the last Award edition) were necessary to identify an autonomous configuration of the exhibition design within the survey activity of the Permanent Observatory.
It’s official. The long and demanding commitment of the Permanent ADI Observatory for the year 2008 has come to an end.
